Liposuction is a popular aesthetic procedure designed to remove stubborn excess fat from virtually any area of the body that remains resistant to a healthy diet and regular exercise routine. With over 15 years of experience, Kelowna plastic surgeon Brian J. Miller, MD is highly talented in using liposuction to not only safely extract unwanted fat, but to do so in a manner that creates smoother contours and a more natural look. By personalizing a liposuction treatment plan to meet your specific needs and goals, he can help you sculpt troublesome spots and achieve a leaner, more toned physique.

What Are the Benefits of Liposuction?

In the hands of a qualified provider, liposuction can benefit patients in a myriad of ways. For example, it can significantly reduce pockets of isolated fat in the abdomen, thighs, buttocks, and elsewhere, often enabling patients to wear a wider range of clothing and feel more comfortable with their bodies. Additionally, the fat cells removed during liposuction cannot redevelop (though it should be noted that because the remaining fat cells can still potentially expand, patients should aim to adhere to a healthy lifestyle and maintain a stable weight following surgery).

An extremely customizable and versatile surgery, liposuction is frequently incorporated into other cosmetic enhancement procedures to achieve optimal effects. In particular, many patients opt to combine liposuction with tummy tuck and breast lift / breast reduction surgery to comprehensively sculpt and contour the midsection.

What Areas of the Body Can Liposuction Treat?

Liposuction can remove excess body fat from many areas of the body. Here are the most common treatment regions:

During your consultation, you will be able to discuss your cosmetic goals with Dr. Miller, and he can create a treatment plan best suited for your needs and desires.

What Does the Liposuction Procedure Entail?

Dr. Miller typically performs standard suction-assisted liposuction (SAL), though he may utilize the VASER liposuction technique for particularly difficult-to-treat areas. During the procedure, a special cannula is inserted through tiny incisions made in and/or around the targeted region. This cannula is carefully maneuvered by Dr. Miller as it removes fatty tissue until a leaner, more desirable contour is achieved. Total treatment time will depend on the number of areas targeted and the quantity of fat removed. Following the procedure, patients are able to return home the same day under the supervision of a friend or family member.

What Can I Expect During Liposuction Recovery?

During the first few days after liposuction, some mild to moderate swelling, bruising, and tenderness can be expected in and around the treatment region(s)—though these side effects are temporary and should resolve on their own. If any discomfort is present, oral medication can almost always provide adequate relief. Most patients look and feel well enough to resume office jobs and other non-strenuous responsibilities within one week, but any heavy lifting, vigorous exercise, and most physical activities will need to be avoided for a minimum of four weeks. A compression garment worn over the treatment area is often recommended for the first few post-operative weeks to help minimize swelling. Following this period, a gradual return to all activities is generally possible.

Does Liposuction Cause Scarring?

Because the incisions made during liposuction are typically quite small, any residual marks should be difficult to see, once healed. As with every surgery he performs, Dr. Miller will be careful to make your incisions in locations where they can be easily concealed or hidden by clothing when possible. Moreover, noticeable scarring is not common in liposuction patients – especially when they wear their compression garment as directed and strictly follow instructions for aftercare.

When Will I See My Liposuction Results?

Patients may see a noticeable difference immediately after the procedure and as swelling subsides. Final liposuction results usually are evident two to three months after the surgery. Weight fluctuations may compromise liposuction results, which is why we recommend that patients maintain a stable weight and adopt a healthy lifestyle, so that they can enjoy the benefits of liposuction for many years.

Is Liposuction Safe?

Liposuction procedures that are properly performed by an experienced, board-certified plastic surgeon, like Dr. Miller, are considered safe and effective. Throughout the treatment process, Dr. Miller ensures that every patient receives the highest quality of care and safety possible; however, with any surgery, there are potential risks. To reduce the likelihood of any complications, patients should follow any pre- and post-operative instructions that Dr. Miller provides.

Is Non-Surgical Liposuction Possible?

As of yet, no non-surgical cosmetic treatment can compare to the results of liposuction. This is because liposuction specifically involves the use of a powerful suction device to reduce large buildups of fat, a feat that requires a surgical procedure. That said, certain non-surgical treatments may be able to address smaller or less pronounced pockets of fat. If you are unsure whether liposuction is the best procedure for you, Dr. Miller can discuss your options during an initial consultation.

How Much Does Liposuction Cost?

Liposuction procedures are customized to the individual, which means that the cost of treatment will vary among patients. Some of the factors that can influence the overall expense of liposuction include the complexity of the procedure, the number of areas being treated, techniques utilized, surgeon’s fee, surgical facility costs, anesthesia fees, medication, and any post-operative garments needed. Additional Liposuction FAQs

Is liposuction painful?

Because liposuction is typically performed under general anesthesia, there should be little to no opportunity for significant pain during the procedure. Temporary side effects such as tenderness, swelling, and bruising can usually be mitigated with oral medication.

How much weight can you lose with liposuction?

Although liposuction is designed to remove fat, it is important to understand it is not a weight loss procedure. Patients should be at—or very close to—their desired body weight prior to treatment, and should plan to maintain a healthy lifestyle for optimal results following the surgery.

How much fat can be removed with liposuction?

Liposuction can typically remove one to four liters of fat. With this in mind, the precise amount of fat to be removed will depend on the size of the area, or areas, being targeted.
